Payson Team Sortings were a great success!
Saturday April 19th, we had our final sorting in our Payson Buckle Series.
Although a new event to the area, it turned out to be a huge success.
We more than doubled our number of teams with only flyer, email, snail mail and word of mouth advertising.
We are gracious to have had newspaper coverage locally in Payson, which assisted in getting the word out and gaining some interest.
We decided to add a clinic to the event Friday evening, and it went over with a bang.
It was sold out with 23 participants and a number of people auditing.
We'd like to thank all of those who came out and gave it a try, and those that assisted us in pulling it together.
The food was provided by "Hog Wild" of Camp Verde and was excellent.
I don't know anyone that doesn't like mouth watering fresh pulled pork which is their specialty, and that's what we were treated to.
We will again have photo albums available for viewing at the next sorting on May 17th, at Arena Del Loma in Camp Verde.
Don't forget to pick up the Bridle and Bit for May as there will be an article about the sorting with a few photos.
(Click here for a sneak preview of the article text with more details about the April event.)
We hope that you will join us for the next series and your chance to win a trophy saddle, buckle and more great awards!
As the Team Sorting Events we produce grow we will be making positive changes in how we produce them, such as introducing divisions for Novice and Youth, a Ladies Class as well as adding sophisticated prize rewards, as well as having added money classes. With that growth we will be looking for Sponsors to help grow this event not only in Payson, but in Camp Verde. If you would like to talk to us about getting involved whether on a volunteer basis or as a sponsor please contact us via email or directly. If we find that there is enough interest and involvement the hopes of forming a local association will be brought to the table.
Please bookmark and visit our website often to see current information on recent events as well as upcoming events and details.

TEAM SORTING DESCRIPTION
|
Team sorting is a working cow horse sport featuring fast-paced action in a friendly yet competitive environment. Team sorting is an entertaining spectator sport that can be fun for the whole family. It is a physical event for both horse and rider. The horse and rider are challenged to learn how to read and control cattle. This popular sport will improve your horse's performance, cow sense and overall athleticism. This is a sport that combines, promotes and encourages team work with horse and rider as well as teammates. This sport encourages riders of all levels to join in.
We will be formatting our sortings to run like this. Each team is given a set of cattle, general rule being that you're given 10-12 head with 10 of them being numbered 0-9. To be accommodating initially we may use less cattle. Each team draws the number they are to start with. Once that is established, you have a cutter that cuts out each cow starting with the first draw and cutting them in sequence. Any cow crossing the foul line out of order results in a no time. Once the cow is cut, the wingman or lane man takes the cow from the foul line to the sorter in the back and then the sorter will sort even numbers in one pen and odd numbers in the other. This is a timed event, fastest time wins.
